This script is for Debian Linux users of the MATE Desktop who want to replace mate-screensaver with xscreensaver. It does the following: Uninstalls mate-screensaver and prevents it from being reinstalled. Normally, apt will try to reinstall it every time you use it after removing mate-screensaver. Installs xscreensaver (with or without extras, based on user choice). Configures xscreensaver as the screen locker for MATE and adds it to startup. Shortcuts to lock the screen will now be handled by xscreensaver. Optionally enables the Sonar screen hack to run real pings, a cool effect. Why? Ping requires elevated privileges, and setuid allows an app to run as its owner. This is totally optional. -- bt 05/07/25
